Twelve people have died of swine flu in India since the beginning of March, according to reports from the Health Ministry on March 23rd. Half of the deaths have been reported in the state of Maharashtra. Deaths have also been reported in Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka. Nearly 130 others have been infected with the virus. The cause of the sudden outbreak is not clear. The virus killed more than 450 Indians when it first emerged in 2009.

The Health Ministry says it is monitoring the situation and states that have reported the virus have been advised to step up surveillance to control the further spread of the virus.
