August 12, 2009. Costa Rican President Contracts Swine Flu

Costa Rican President Oscar Arias announced on August 11th that he had contracted H1N1 virus, making him the first head of state to become infected. Arias tested positive for the virus and has been quarantined in his home while being treated with anti-flu medicine. Some presidential duties have reportedly been given to Cabinet ministers while Arias is out.
There have been 20 H1N1 deaths in the country since the outbreak hit in May 2009.
