Universities, secondary schools, restaurants, movie theaters, gyms and sports facilities will reopen in Mexico City on 7 May 2009. Employees at these facilities must screen customers for flu-like symptoms. Surgical masks are mandatory for all customers and employees.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported at least 1,893 confirmed cases in 23 countries. The WHO has confirmed at least 42 deaths in Mexico and two in the United States. WHO officials will meet on 14 May 2009 to discuss whether pharmaceutical companies should switch production from a seasonal flu vaccine to a swine flu vaccine.
In South Africa, the Gauteng province health department reported on 7 May 2009 that two thermal scanners have been installed at Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport (FAJS/JNB) to check for potential H1N1 flu cases. The health department has also deployed three nurses to the airport for preventative purposes. So far, there have been no confirmed H1N1 flu cases in South Africa; two suspected cases earlier in the month tested negative for the virus.
