10/27/2020 (Pakistan) - Local authorities have confirmed that the death toll from a suspected bomb attack at a madrassah in Peshawar's Dir Colony on Tuesday, October 27, has risen to at least eight, with more than 110 others being injured in the incident. The blast is believed to have been caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) which was detonated during a Quran class at the seminary, with police sources stating that around 6kg (13lb) of explosives were used in the attack. However, it is currently unclear whether the device was detonated by a person inside the building. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the bombing.
Localized disruptions are likely in Peshawar's Dir Colony in the near term amid the ongoing emergency response and investigative operations. Security operations are likely in the city and surrounding areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in the medium term.
Context
Although levels of violence have decreased in Pakistan in recent years, multiple militant groups, including Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Al-Qai'da, Islamic State (IS) affiliates, Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, and the Afghan Taliban, continue to operate in areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and stage periodic terrorist attacks, including in Peshawar. Attacks on security forces in the province have also been increasing in recent months amid anti-militant operations.
Those in Peshawar are advised to avoid the affected area and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
