10/25/2020 (Pakistan) - Emerging reports on social media outlets indicate that a bomb blast has occurred in the Hazar Ganji area of Quetta (Balochistan province) on Sunday, October 25. A vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) attached to a motorcycle detonated, and unconfirmed media sources indicate that there have been casualties, though the number is not yet verified. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
A heightened security presence and localized disruptions to transportation and business are to be expected around the incident site over the coming hours. Similar attacks are possible in Quetta over the near term.
Context
Extremist Islamist groups, including the terrorist organization Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TPP) and various terrorist groups under its umbrella, continue to pose a threat throughout the country despite continued army offensives to push them from their northwestern strongholds near the Afghan border.
Those in Quetta are advised to monitor developments, avoid the affected area, and report any suspicious items or activity to security forces.
Due to a high threat from terrorism, as well as kidnapping and sectarian violence, some Western governments advise their citizens to reconsider travel to Pakistan as foreign nationals, and Westerners in particular, may be directly targeted.
