10/25/2020 (South Africa) - A group of some 300 farmers staged a protest in Cape Town on Sunday, October 25, against murders and damages to farms. The demonstrators gathered outside of the Parliament building to demand more police patrols in rural areas. The protest comes amid unrest earlier in October sparked by the murder of Brendin Horner which saw protesters set fire to police vehicles in Senekal (Free State province) and attempt to storm the courthouse. The AfriForum civil society organization has held demonstrations in Senekal to denounce the targeting of farmers.
Further protests regarding the issue are possible in the near term.
Those in Cape Town are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
