Militants launch several attacks in Cabo Delgado October 16-23

10/25/2020 (Mozambique) - Reports indicate that between October 16 and Friday, October 23, Islamic insurgents launched nine attacks on local villages in Macomia, Mocimboa da Praia, Quissanga, Palma, and Melucodistrict in Cabo Delgado province. These attacks have led to the deaths of two civilians and the destruction of nine villages and have left hundreds of people displaced. Mozambican defence and security forces (FDS) claim to have killed 270 insurgents in Awasse in Mocimboa da Praia district between October 16 and October 18.
Further attacks, in addition to security operations, are possible in the area in the near term.
Context
Cabo Delgado province has seen a significant increase in Islamist militant activity in 2020. At least 900 civilians have been killed, and at least 150,000 more have fled Cabo Delgado since the Ahlu Sunnah Wa-Jama insurgency began in 2017.
Those in Cabo Delgado province are advised to monitor developments, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments. Some Western governments advise against all travel to parts of Cabo Delgado province. Travelers in or intending to travel to Cabo Delgado should seek professional security support due to the volatile security environment and potential for further attacks.
