Militants attack security personnel in Chaharbarak district (Nimroz province) October 23

10/24/2020 (Afghanistan) - Suspected Taliban militants attacked security personnel assigned to the Kamal Khan hydroelectric and irrigation dam project in Chaharbarak district (Nimroz province) on Friday evening, October 23, killing six. Reports indicate that two other security personnel were wounded in the attack that occurred near the dam. The Taliban militant group did not immediately comment on the incident.
Security operations are expected in the area following the incident and further attacks by militants are likely over the medium term.
Context
According to the Afghan National Water Management Authority, the project has the capacity to irrigate 429,963 acres (174,000 hectares) of land in three districts and will supply water to Zaranj, the capital of Nimroz, and will be able to initially store 52 million cubic meters of water.

Those in Nimroz province are advised to monitor developments in their own particular area of operations through a range of multi-source intelligence advisories and should heed all instructions issued by local authorities or their home governments.
