10/24/2020 (Sudan) - Hundreds of protesters gathered in the capital Khartoum for a third consecutive day on Friday, October 23, against deteriorating socio-economic conditions in the country and calls for political reforms. Furthermore, protesters have also been denouncing the alleged death of a demonstrator during violent unrest on Wednesday, October 21, whereby security forces forcibly dispersed demonstrators in the capital. The rallies in recent days have seen key bridges in and around the capital blocked by security forces, and by protesters who have established checkpoints in order to demand justice for the deceased demonstrator.
Protests began on Wednesday in the capital and in the twin city of Omdurman, and reports indicate that one person was fatally killed and 14 others wounded in the unrest. Security forces reportedly blocked off all bridges connecting Khartoum, Bahari, and Omdurman across the Blue and White Nile to prevent protesters from reaching the downtown area. Some of the gatherings have been in relation to the commemoration of the Revolution of October 1964.
A heightened security presence and associated disruptions are to be expected in the vicinity of any protest site in the near term. Further associated protests are likely in the coming weeks.
Those in Khartoum are advised to monitor developments, avoid all demonstrations and political gatherings as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
