Landslide kills miners in South Sumatra province on October 21

10/22/2020 (Indonesia) - Indonesian authorities report that 11 miners were killed in a landslide at a coal mine in South Sumatra province on Wednesday, October 21. The incident occurred in Tanjung Lalang village in Muara Enim regency. The landslide was caused by heavy rainfall in recent days amid the annual rainy season. All of the bodies have been recovered from the mine.
Further rainfall is expected in the area over the near term, with Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency forecasting light to moderate rain for the next three days. A disruption to transportation and business is likely while rains continue.
Those in affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, including evacuation orders. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters.
