10/22/2020 (Afghanistan) - Local media reports state that at least 12 people were killed and a further 14 wounded following an Afghan military airstrike targeting Taliban fighters in the northeastern province of Takhar on Wednesday, October 21. Many of those killed and injured were reportedly children after the strike allegedly hit a religious school in the region; investigations are underway.
Taliban fighters had killed at least 37 government troops in attacks over the past 72 hours as the insurgents mounted an offensive to overrun Baharak district in Takhar, prompting government forces to call in air support, provincial officials said.
Further operations are likely to take place in Takhar province in the near to medium term.
Context
Taliban militants launch attacks on government personnel, security forces, and civilians in Afghanistan on a near-daily basis. Such assaults are, in part, intended to undermine the perceived capacity of the ANSF - and the Afghan government more broadly - to adequately provide security in the wake of the withdrawal of most US-led NATO forces from the country.

Those in Takhar province are advised to monitor developments in their own particular area of operations through a range of multi-source intelligence advisories and should heed all instructions issued by local authorities or their home governments.
The security environment in Afghanistan remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
