10/22/2020 (Nigeria) - Reports state that there is an ongoing protest taking place on and in the vicinity of Iwo Road in Ibadan on Thursday, October 22. Images show protesters partially blocking the road and lighting small fires along it, with the majority of the protesters congregated around the roundabout. So far, there have been no injuries or clashes reported; however, the protesters are likely to be met by security forces in the coming hours. The protests are associated with the #EndSARs campaign which has driven multiple protests across the country in recent days.
Continued protests in Ibadan, as well as throughout Nigeria, are likely over the near term. A heightened security presence and associated transport and business disruptions are to be expected near protest sites.
Context
A series of protests organized by the #EndSARS social media campaign have been held across Nigeria over the past few months and have intensified in recent days, with demonstrations having led to fatal clashes between protesters and security forces. Unrest has continued despite an announcement by President Muhammadu Buhari that the controversial SARS police unit would be disbanded and replaced by a new agency called SWAT, a move which protesters have rejected.
Those in Lagos are advised to monitor the situation, adjust travel itineraries and avoid unnecessary overland movement in the immediate term, avoid the vicinity of any demonstrations, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
