Gunmen attack village in Zamfara State on October 20

10/22/2020 (Nigeria) - On Wednesday, October 21, unidentified gunmen attacked the village of Tugar Kwana in the Talata-Mafara Local Government Area (Zamfara State) killing at least 20 villagers. The gunmen reportedly attacked the village late Wednesday night, with additional security forces being deployed to the area in response. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Further attacks and a heightened security presence are to be expected in the area in the near to medium-term.
Context
In recent years, Zamfara State has faced serious threats from armed groups stealing cattle, kidnapping for ransom, and attacking communities, causing some locals in the state to form vigilante gangs. There has also been an increase in informal mining in the mineral-rich region, attracting outsiders and further fueling instability.
