10/22/2020 (United States) - Emergency officials evacuated more than 400 people from Grand Lake (Grand County), Colorado, throughout the evening of Wednesday, October 21, as the East Troublesome Fire continues to expand in size in the central area of the state. The fire is believed to have grown by more than 5000 acres (2023 hectares) over the previous 24-hours, fueled by high winds and dry weather, and is currently 30,000 acres (12,141 hectares) in size with an estimated 10 percent containment. Details about the fire and evacuations can be found here.
Meanwhile, the Cameron Peak Fire continues to burn west of Fort Collins in Larimer county. The fire has been burning since August 13 and is the largest wildfire in the state's history. As of October 22, it is approximately 206,000 acres (83,365 hectares) in size and is estimated to be 55 percent contained. Full information on areas under mandatory and voluntary evacuation orders can be found here.
In neighboring Utah, homes in and near Provo Canyon were evacuated due to a new wildfire on Mount Timpanogos. The Range Fire has grown to an estimated 3300 acres (1335 hectares) and is 33 percent contained. Between 100 and 120 firefighters are battling the fire from the ground and air. Roads have been closed in the area and evacuation centers have been opened.
Further spread of the fires and additional evacuations are possible in the near term. An emergency response presence and localized transportation disruptions, namely road closures, should be anticipated in the affected areas.
Those in the affected areas are advised to monitor the situation, avoid the area, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities, including evacuation orders.
