Protest scheduled in Deryneia on October 25

10/21/2020 (Cyprus) - A border protest is scheduled to take place in Deryneia on Sunday, October 25. The protest is set to take place at approximately 15:30 (local time) at the Deryneia border checkpoint. The demonstration is being held to denounce plans by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) to develop Varosha (Maras), as a holiday resort. A previous related demonstration on October 11, resulted in clashes between protesters and security forces.
A heightened security presence and associated disruptions are to be expected in the vicinity of the protest site. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Those in Deryneia are advised to monitor developments, avoid all demonstrations and political gatherings as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
