10/21/2020 (Bangladesh) - Protests are scheduled to take place nationwide on Wednesday, October 21, over the sexual assault of a woman in Noakhali. The demonstrations, which will reportedly involve nationwide highway, rail, and road blockades, have been organized by student organizations, women's groups, and other various civil society groups.
The latest series of demonstrations follow several high-profile sexual assault cases in recent weeks which sparked public outrage in Bangladesh. The protests have spurred the government to seek capital punishment for those convicted of sexual assault.
Further associated demonstrations and events are likely across the country, particularly in Dhaka, in the near term. Associated disruptions should be anticipated in the vicinity of rallies and events. A heightened security presence should also be anticipated.
Those in Bangladesh are advised to monitor developments, avoid demonstrations, protests, and political gatherings as a precaution, and heed any directives issued by local authorities.
