10/18/2020 (Congo (Kinshasa)) - An improvised explosive device (IED) targeted an Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) convoy in Beni territory (North Kivu province) on Saturday evening, October 17, injuring three soldiers. The explosion reportedly occurred near Eringeti in the Bambuba Kisiki area. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, although sources have suggested that the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebel group may have been responsible for planting the device.
Further attacks and counter security operations are likely in North Kivu in the near term.
Context
The government's limited presence in the DRC's eastern provinces, as well as the presence of numerous armed groups and local self-defense militias, has led to continued insecurity in the region.

Those in North Kivu are advised to remain vigilant for rebel and militia activity, monitor developments, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
A number of Western governments advise their citizens against travel to the east and northeast of the country due to poor security conditions, including the presence of armed groups and a high risk of kidnapping. Professional security advice should be sought prior to travel.
