Civilians killed in attack in Benishangul-Gumuz region on October 11

10/12/2020 (Ethiopia) - At least 12 civilians were killed in an attack in the Mandura district of Benishangul-Gumuz region on the evening of Sunday, October 11. Local sources indicate that significantly more people may have been killed in the attack, which reportedly originated in a dispute between individuals over the robbery of a firearm. The aggrieved party allegedly attacked civilians in revenge. Police have reportedly arrested the perpetrators of the shooting but stated that the search was ongoing for more others that may be implicated.
Several attacks have taken place in the Benshangul-Gumuz region in recent weeks, with dozens of civilians killed. A heightened security presence is to be expected in the vicinity of the incident. Further similar attacks cannot be ruled out over the near term.

Those in the affected areas are advised to monitor the situation, remain vigilant for security operations and militant activity, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
