10/11/2020 (Congo (Kinshasa)) - At least six people were killed in fighting on Thursday, October 8, in Irumu territory (Ituri province) between Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) and Cooperative for the Development of Congo (CODECO) rebels. Reports indicate that a group of rebels attacked military positions in the area near Mbetchi village. Fighting ensued between the two sides which resulted in five rebels and one civilian killed. Security forces remain deployed in the area and continue to conduct search operations.
Further clashes between government forces and militia groups in the near term cannot be ruled out.
Context
The government's limited presence in the DRC's eastern provinces, as well as the presence of numerous armed groups and local self-defense militias, has led to continued insecurity in the region.

Those in Ituri province are advised to remain vigilant for militia activity, monitor developments in their own area of operations, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
