CODECO rebels kill two civilians in attack in Ituri province October 7

10/09/2020 (Congo (Kinshasa)) - Two civilians were killed, one other kidnapped, and over three hundred cattle stolen during an attack by suspected Cooperative Development Group of Congo (CODECO) rebels in Djugu territory (Ituri province) on Wednesday, October 7. The attack involved around thirty assailants and took place in the village of Fichama, near Kasenyi. All the victims were cattle herders, and the fate of the kidnapped individual is not currently known.
Security operations are likely in the vicinity of the incident in the coming days. Attacks by armed groups are expected to continue across the region over the medium term.
Context
The government's limited presence in the DRC's eastern provinces, as well as the presence of numerous armed groups and local self-defense militias, has led to continued insecurity in the region.
Those in Ituri province are advised to remain vigilant for rebel and militia activity, monitor developments, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
