Security forces kill youths during clashes in Abala (Afar region) September 15

09/16/2020 (Ethiopia) - Three youths were shot dead and nine others were injured in clashes with members of the regional special forces in Abala (also known as Shiket; Afar region) on Tuesday, September 15. Violence reportedly broke out over claims the youths were violating coronavirus disease (COVID-19) restrictions. Property was reportedly also damaged in the unrest.
Further clashes between locals and security forces are possible in Abala and the surrounding area over the near term.
Those in Afar region are advised to monitor local media sources for further updates on the incident and any associated security operations and heed any directives issued by local authorities.
