Heightened security ahead of possible protests in Ashgabat September 14

09/14/2020 (Turkmenistan) - Authorities in Ashgabat have reportedly tightened security in the capital on Monday, September 14, as unauthorized opposition protests are expected to take place. Opposition activists linked to the Democratic Choice of Turkmenistan (DVY) party have called for demonstrations to denounce proposed constitutional amendments. Parliament is due to vote on the amendments on September 25.
A visibly heightened security presence is expected in Ashgabat on Monday and may continue through to September 25. Additional checkpoints, document checks, and disruptions to mobile internet services are possible.

Those in Ashgabat are advised to closely monitor developments, avoid all protests and large public gatherings as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
