09/14/2020 (Kenya) - At least one person has been killed and seven others have been wounded after fighting broke out between rival communities in the Mariashoni area of Eastern Mau Forest (Njoro sub-county; Nakuru county) on Sunday, September 13. One community was reportedly ambushed by another in the latest outbreak of violence between rival groups in the area. Those wounded have been taken to hospital and additional security personnel have been deployed in the area.
A heightened security presence is expected in the area over the near term and further clashes between rival communities are likely over the medium term.
Context
Long running disputes over land, cattle rustling, and competition for resources in the area have resulted in recurrent ethnic clashes for over three decades. Police were deployed to the area after eight people were killed, 83 others injured, and nearly 200 houses torched across ten villages in late July.

Those in Nakuru county are advised to monitor local media sources for further updates on the incident and any associated security operations and heed any directives issued by local authorities.
