09/14/2020 (Uganda) - At least eight people have been killed and three others wounded after clashes broke out at a refugee camp in Madi Okollo county (Arua district; Northern region) on Friday, September 11. The clashes were sparked after a local villager died after allegedly being assaulted by refugees from the Rhino Refugee settlement. A mob of local residents attacked the camp in retaliation. The camp mostly houses refugees from neighboring South Sudan and tensions have escalated between the refugees and locals in recent years over resources such as land, firewood, and water. Many inhabitants fled the camp during the attack and some are still missing, with officials warning casualty numbers could rise. Additional security forces have been deployed to the area following the clashes and 13 villagers have been arrested in connection with the attack on the camp.
A heightened security presence is expected in the vicinity of the camp over the near term and further clashes cannot be ruled out.

Those in Modi Okollo county are advised to monitor local media sources for further updates on the incident and any associated security operations and heed any directives issued by local authorities.
