Healthcare employees begin seven-day strike nationwide September 14

09/14/2020 (Nigeria) - Members of the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) and Assembly of the Healthcare Professionals (AHPA) have begun a seven-day nationwide strike on Monday, September 14. The JOHESU includes nurses, pharmacists, and lab technicians. The strike follows the suspension of an indefinite strike by the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) on Friday, September 11, over similar issues. The health sector unions have called for the strike action over better working conditions and salary arrears. It is unclear if NARD members will also participate in the strike action.
Associated demonstrations are possible during the strike action, with medical facilities, hospitals, and government buildings likely hotspot locations in major cities. The strike action is likely to affect public healthcare services at healthcare facilities and hospitals; emergency care services will likely still be available.
Those in the country are advised that medical assistance may be unavailable during the aforementioned period. Travelers are advised to review their contingency plans in light of the industrial action and ensure that alternative medical provisions are in place during their time in country.
