09/13/2020 (Malaysia) - At least 104 people were evacuated from Kuala Kangsar in Perak State on the night of Saturday, September 12, after the town was hit by flash flooding. Dozens of properties in the Padang Rengas area on the western outskirts of the town were reportedly inundated by floodwaters at around 22:00 (local time) on Saturday after prolonged heavy rainfall throughout the day. Residents were subsequently evacuated to three refuge centers in the area by emergency responders. Floodwaters have since begun to recede on Sunday morning, September 13, but it is unclear when residents will be able to return to their homes.
Localized residual disruptions are likely in the Kuala Kangsar area in the near term due to flood damage and associated recovery operations.
Those in Perak State should be aware of the potential for weather-related disruption and are advised to monitor developments and heed any directives issued by local authorities. Moving floodwaters can be extremely dangerous and travelers should never attempt to drive or walk through flooded streets. Floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products and present significant health risks.
