Turkish military carry out anti-PKK operation in Sirnak province September 13

09/13/2020 (Turkey) - The Turkish military announced on Sunday, September 13, that three Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militants had been 'neutralized' during the course of an operation in Sirnak province. The militants were targeted during an air-backed operation by local gendarmerie forces in the Bestler Dereler region of the province. The incident took place during part of the wider Operation Yildirim-11, which was launched on Friday, September 11, and covers the provinces of Siirt and Sirnak. Operation Yildirim-11 is reportedly ongoing. The Turkish military uses the term 'neutralized' to denote individuals killed or captured.
Further clashes between Turkish forces and PKK militants are likely while the operation continues. A heightened security presence and associated disruptions to transportation and business should be expected.
Context
Turkey has faced a Kurdish insurgency since 1984, spearheaded by the PKK, which was renewed in 2015 following the dissolution of a ceasefire. The conflict has left over 40,000 people dead since 1984 and associated violence continues to pose a significant security risk in southeastern Turkey.
