09/13/2020 (Iraq) - An Iraqi driver was injured on Saturday, September 12, when a logistical convoy was targeted in an improvised explosive device (IED) attack in the al-Rayash area of Saladin governorate. At least one vehicle in the convoy carrying US military equipment is reported to have been damaged in the blast around 20km (12 miles) south of Baiji. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but previous bombings targeting military logistical convoys have been attributed to Shia militia groups.
Similar attacks targeting US coalition facilities and interests are possible in Iraq over the near term.
Context
Multiple IED attacks targeting logistics convoys supporting US forces have been reported in Iraq since August, with most such incidents being attributed to Shia militia groups. While the details regarding motivations and perpetrators associated with the attack remain unvalidated, the incidents coincide with an increase of tensions between the US and Shia militias following the second iteration of the US-Iraq Strategic Dialogue held in late August.

Those in the area are advised to monitor developments and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
The security environment in Iraq remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to all travel.
