09/12/2020 (Kenya) - At least four herders were killed on the afternoon of Thursday, September 10, in an attack by suspected cattle raiders in the Kibish area of Turkana County, near the border with Ethiopia. At least one of the alleged attackers is also reported to have been killed in the raid, and a local police reservist injured, as the herders attempted to protect their livestock at the River Nakuwa. However, the thieves are believed to have escaped with around 350 head of cattle and fled across the border into Ethiopia.
Police have stated that patrols will be increased in the area following the attack. However, the remote location and difficult terrain mean that security forces are likely to struggle to prevent any further attacks on herder communities.
Context
Thursday's incident occurred in the Kibish area of the Ilemi Triangle, a disputed region at the trijunction of Kenya's borders with Ethiopia and South Sudan. Although there have been no significant incidents involving national security forces in the region, the area has seen frequent clashes between rival herder communities amid competition over access to grazing and water resources.

Those in Turkana County are advised to monitor local media sources for further updates on the incident and any associated security operations and heed any directives issued by local authorities.
