09/12/2020 (Nigeria) - On Friday, September 11, an act of sabotage at a power transmission facility in the Oygbo Local Government Area (LGA) on the outskirts of Port Harcourt caused a near-total blackout of the city and surrounding areas. The damage was reportedly caused by youths protesting against the alleged inability by the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) to provide steady electricity at no cost to its host communities.
Access to the site was regained on Saturday, September 12, and full power is expected to be restored by the end of the day.
Those in Port Harcourt and surrounding areas are advised to keep battery-operated devices fully charged whenever possible, and to be cautious when driving or crossing streets during power outages.
