09/09/2020 (Greece) - Thousands of migrants have been forced to evacuate the Moria refugee camp on the island of Lesbos after a fire broke out in the early hours of Wednesday, September 9. Tents and containers are reported to have been destroyed in the fire but no casualties have been reported. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined. There are wildfires currently burning on other parts of the island, but the camp has also witnessed riots in the past which have sometimes led to fires and other destruction. The camp was placed under quarantine last week after a migrant tested positive for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), with 35 more cases subsequently being reported.
Localized disruptions are expected in the vicinity of the camp as the response to the fire continues.
Those on Lesbos are advised to monitor the situation, avoid the vicinity of the camp, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
