09/09/2020 (Congo (Kinshasa)) - Two incidents involving suspected Cooperative Development Group of Congo (CODECO) rebels occurred on Monday, September 7, in Djugu territory (Ituri province). According to media sources, a group of CODECO rebels ambushed and shot dead the local chief of Saikpa, located in Bahema Banywagi chiefdom in Djugu and approximately 10km (6.2 mi) east of Bunia. It was later reported that at around 19:00 (local time) in Bambou, also in Djugu territory and approximately 40km (25 mi) north of Bunia, CODECO militia attacked two Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) personnel on patrol, killing one soldier.
Further attacks in the area and across Ituri province are likely in the medium term.
Context
The government's limited presence in the DRC's eastern provinces, as well as the presence of numerous armed groups and local self-defense militias, has led to continued insecurity in the region.
Those in Ituri province are advised to remain vigilant for rebel and militia activity, monitor developments, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
