Widespread flooding kills at least 13 as of September 9

09/09/2020 (Burkina Faso) - The Burkinabe government announced on Wednesday, September 9, that at least 13 people have been killed and 19 others injured as days of heavy rain caused flooding in many parts of the country, including the capital Ouagadougou. Widespread damage has also been caused throughout the country, with many people being left homeless. The government declared a state of national disaster on Wednesday and the finance ministry has promised 5 billion CFA francs (USD 9 million) to provide aid for those in need of assistance following the floods.
Further rains are forecast in the coming days, which will likely lead to more flooding and associated disruptions to businesses and transport.
Context
Flooding often causes widespread disruption in the central and northern regions of the country during the wet season between May and September. Heavy rain and floodwaters can cause significant damage to infrastructure, especially roads, which often takes months to repair and raises the danger of insect-borne diseases.
