Demonstrators gather in Dili September 8

09/08/2020 (East Timor) - Demonstrators affiliated with the Alliance of Timor-Leste University Students (AUTL) are staging a protest in Dili on Tuesday, September 8, to demand that the government allow fee exemptions for undergraduate students. Demonstrators have gathered in the vicinity of the National University of Timor-Leste (UNTL), where protests have been occurring since Monday, September 7. The AUTL has stated that demonstrations will occur in the area until at least Friday, September 11.
A heightened security presence and associated disruptions to transportation are likely around any protests.
Individuals in Dili are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
