Military forces clash with Arakan Army rebels in Rakhine state September 8

09/08/2020 (Myanmar) - Fighting between military forces and Arakan Army (AA) rebels has continued in Rathedaung Township (Rakhine State) on Tuesday, September 8. Gunfire has been reported in several villages in the area, including in Kin Chaung. According to media sources, military forces targeted AA positions near Kyauktan village on Friday, September 4, using helicopters and the violence has continued and escalated since. The number of casualties has not yet been confirmed.
Heightened security in the affected areas and further fighting between the two forces is likely to continue in the coming days. Disruptions to transport and business services is also possible in the state as the violence ensues.
Context
Violence resumed in early December 2018 between Rakhine separatists and the military. The AA seeks greater autonomy for Buddhists in Rakhine state. According to the Myanmar office of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), about 7500 displaced people are scattered across 29 sites in Rakhine due to the violence and 730,000 people in neighboring Bangladesh.
Those in Rakhine state are advised to avoid the area, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
