Ethnic clashes kill five in Bute (Wajir County) September 6

09/08/2020 (Kenya) - Ethnic clashes between two neighbouring clans of Ajuran community and Ormo from Ethiopia were reported on Sunday, September 6, in Wajir county resulting in at least five people killed. Local sources indicate that the fighting erupted in Bute (Wajir North) after a Kenyan boda boda rider (motorcycle taxi driver) was allegedly kidnapped and killed 7km (4 mi) from the town. Reports indicate that in response, residents of the town began targeting and attacking Ethiopian nationals running various businesses in the border town.
Further clashes between the communities in the area are possible in the near term. Additional security forces may also deploy to the area is fighting continues to calm tensions.
Those in the area are advised to monitor the situation, remain vigilant, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
