09/08/2020 (Angola) - The National Union of Doctors of Angola (SINMEA) has called for a demonstration in Luanda on Saturday, September 12, to mark the end of seven days of mourning for the death in police custody of doctor Silvio Dala. Participants will reportedly gather from 12:30 (local time) in Mutamba before marching through Luanda. The demonstration will likely remain peaceful; however, clashes between security forces and participants of the rally cannot be ruled out.
A heightened security presence is to be anticipated in the vicinity of any rally, along with associated transport disruptions. Demonstrations relating to the incident are possible elsewhere in Angola.
Context
Silvio died in police custody on September 1 after being arrested for allegedly not wearing a face mask as part of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) measures. There is controversy as to how Silvio died in police custody, with some suggesting he was killed by excessive police force.

Those in Angola are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
