Demonstrators to gather in Guatemala City September 8

09/08/2020 (Guatemala) - Demonstrators plan to gather on Tuesday, September 8, outside the Congress building in Guatemala City to denounce proposed government amendments to a loan agreement with the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) and the University of San Carlos (USAC). Participants are expected to gather from 10:00 (local time). Similar protests have been held by USAC students in recent days and have been well-attended.
Localized disruption in the vicinity of the demonstration rally are possible. A heightened security presence is also likely in the vicinity of the protest and further associated demonstrations are possible.
Those in Guatemala City are advised to monitor the situation, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid all demonstrations and large gatherings as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
