08/11/2020 (Mali) - Unidentified militants reportedly assaulted a gendarmerie position and a prison in Kimparana (Segou region) in San cercle overnight on Tuesday, August 11. The attack left at least two dead, a gendarme and a prison warden. According to initial reports, the militants set the gendarmerie post on fire, allowing five inmates to escape during the commotion. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
Similar attacks targeting security forces in the region are possible over the near term.
Due to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central regions remain unstable despite the presence of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), one of the largest UN peacekeeping missions in the world.
The security environment in Mali remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
