08/10/2020 (Peru) - Indigenous protesters clashed with police in Peru's Requena province (Loreto region) on Sunday, August 9, resulting in multiple casualties. At least three protesters were killed and a further 11 protesters were injured; six members of security forces were also injured.
A group of 70 people, armed with spears, reportedly attempted to attack an oil facility near the town of BretaƱa. They had gathered in protest against the presence of the facility, which they claim has polluted their lands through oil spills. Police responded with a raid, which led to the casualties. Following the incident, work at the oil facility has been ceased. Officials stated that the protesters belonged to a group that had recently taken over a state-run pumping station, forcing it to halt operations.
Further protests against oil production sites are to be expected in the Loreto region in the near term.

Individuals in Loreto region are advised to monitor developments, avoid the vicinity of the oil-related infrastructure, and all gatherings as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
