08/10/2020 (Nigeria) - Unidentified gunmen reportedly attacked the village of Edikwu (Apa Local Government Area) in Nigeria's Benue state on Monday, August 10, killing at least 13 people. A spokesperson for the state police confirmed the incident, adding that around 20 armed men entered the village early on Monday morning before sporadically shooting at individuals and burning houses. Security forces responded to the attack but were unable to apprehend those responsible. Several residents are reportedly still missing. The incident is believed to be linked to an ongoing dispute over the chieftaincy title in the area.
Further related attacks in Apa Local Government Area are likely in the near term. A heightened security presence is to be expected in the vicinity of the attack as security forces continue their investigations. An associated disruption to transportation is probable over the coming days.

Individuals in Benue state are advised to monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
The security environment in Nigeria remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
