IED explosion reported in Wanlaweyn (Lower Shabelle region) August 9

08/09/2020 (Somalia) - At least two people were injured on Sunday, August 9, in an improvised explosive device (IED) attack in the town of Wanlaweyn (Lower Shabelle region), located around 80km (50 miles) north-west of Mogadishu. The device reportedly exploded in the vicinity of a store distributing Khat in the market.
A heightened security presence, as well as emergency operations, are likely in the area in the near term.

Those in the Lower Shabelle region are advised to monitor developments, review personal security measures, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
The security environment in Somalia remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
