SVBIED explosion kills eight in Mogadishu's Warta Nabada district (Banadir region) August 8

08/08/2020 (Somalia) - A suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (SVBIED) explosion in Warta Nabada district (Banadir region) on the outskirts of Mogadishu on Saturday, August 8, killed at least eight people and wounded 14 others. The blast targeted the Banadir Regional Police Headquarters in the vicinity of the Bar Ayan junction, and the alleged target of the attack was General Gama Dhule, Commander of the Somali National Army 27th Brigade. The casualty toll could rise and further information is awaited. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, although Al-Shabaab militants are known to carry out such attacks in Somalia.
Localized disruptions are likely in the area in the immediate term, along with a heightened security presence.

Those in Mogadishu are advised to remain vigilant for militant activity and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
