Authorities issue forest fire alert in Huila department August 7

08/08/2020 (Colombia) - On Friday, August 7, local authorities issued a red alert for 16 of Huila department's 37 municipalities due to high temperatures and the risk of forest fires. At least 12 other municipalities are under orange or yellow alerts. Numerous fires have burnt in the area recently due to temperatures of over 40°C (104°F) and strong winds, burning more than 500 hectares (1236 acres) of forest area. Controlled burning and other measures have been undertaken in an effort to prevent the fires from endangering local communities.
Further spread of fires is possible over the coming days. Localized transportation disruptions are to be expected in the vicinity of any fires.

Those in the affected areas are advised to monitor developments, avoid the vicinity of any fires, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities, including evacuation orders.
