08/07/2020 (India) - At least five people have been killed after a landslide occurred following heavy rains in Rajamala (Idukki district; Kerala state) on Friday, August 7. Around 80 workers at a tea estate in the area are also reportedly trapped by the landslide near Munnar. Ten people have reportedly been rescued so far by emergency responders and are receiving treatment at a local hospital. Further rescue operations are ongoing.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast extremely heavy rainfall in parts of Kerala until Sunday, August 9. Further landslides, as well as flooding and associated disruptions are possible in the coming days.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid areas directly affected by flooding and those prone to landslides, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
