08/07/2020 (Malawi) - Graduate interns plan to demonstrate in Lilongwe on Friday, August 7. The demonstrators plan to gather outside the vice-president's office at Capital Hill at 09:00 (local time) to protest over the delay of a government internship program. The program's start date has been pushed back from the beginning of August to the beginning of October due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Several thousand people could reportedly participate in the demonstration.
A heightened security presence and localized disruptions are expected in the vicinity of Capital Hill on Friday and clashes between demonstrators and security forces cannot be ruled out.
Individuals in Lilongwe are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
