Context
The northern part of the country is susceptible to earthquakes, and these occur fairly regularly, with the potential to cause widespread damage and loss of life. A major earthquake occurred in 2003, killing around 2,200 people and injuring 10,000 others. Smaller quakes have occurred with relative frequency since then. Poor infrastructure increases the risk of damage.
Individuals in the affected area are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for potential aftershocks.
