08/07/2020 (United States) - Emergency services have announced that they have brought a fire in the Banning Canyon area of Riverside county (California) under 30 percent containment on Thursday, August 6. Dubbed the "Apple Fire", the human-caused blaze has consumed an area of 11,055 hectares (27,319 acres), destroyed at least 12 buildings, and injured one person. Although evacuation orders were lifted in Riverside county, the Oak Glensarea in San Bernardino county remains under an evacuation order. Evacuation warnings are also in place in other areas in the vicinity of the fire. A number of localized road closures also remain in place.
A total of 7800 people are believed to have been evacuated since the fire began in the Cherry Valley area on the evening of Friday, July 31. Further spread of the fire is possible in the near term. An emergency response presence and localized transportation disruptions, namely road closures, should be anticipated in the affected areas.
Those in the affected areas are advised to monitor developments, avoid the vicinity of the fire, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities, including evacuation orders.
