08/06/2020 (Afghanistan) - Gunmen hijacked seven fuel tankers and torched two others in the Bagh-e-Shamal area of Pul-e-Khumri on the Baghlan-Samanganhighway (Baghlan province) on Thursday, August 6. The perpetrators reportedly transported the hijacked tankers to Baghlan's Dahna-ye-Ghori district. Local officials are yet to comment on the incident, and no group immediately claimed responsibility.
Separately, on Wednesday, August 5, at least 12 people were killed in a roadside blast that took place in Chashmaye Shir area of Baghlan province along the Baghlan-Samangan highway. It is believed that the attack targeted Mahbubullah Ghafari, a former member of the provincial council of Baghlan; however, he escaped unharmed. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the blast.
Further attacks are likely in Baghlan in the near term.
Context
Militants launch attacks on government personnel, security forces, and civilians in Afghanistan on a near-daily basis. Such assaults are, in part, intended to undermine the perceived capacity of Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) - and the Afghan government more broadly - to adequately provide security in the wake of the withdrawal of most US-led NATO forces from the country and to gain leverage amid ongoing peace negotiations.

The security environment in Afghanistan remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.¿
