08/06/2020 (Libya) - The Libya Airports Authority has announced that Mitiga International Airport (MJI) will reopen on Sunday, August 9. The airport has been closed due to maintenance work and was scheduled to reopen at an unspecified time in August; however, a fire at Misrata Airport (MRA)on Monday, August 3, is believed to have prompted authorities to bring forward the reopening date after MRA was closed following damage to the passenger terminal. Reports suggest that flights that are scheduled to travel to MRA will transfer to MJI as of Sunday. The reopening also comes following a visit delegation from the Maltese Civil Aviation Authority to the airport to assess the possibility of resuming flights between Malta and Libya if MJI conforms to International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.
Individuals traveling via MJI are advised to monitor the situation, anticipate residual delays, and confirm flight reservations.
The security environment in Libya remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
